How to Calculate Sod
Measure the Area
Find the length and width of your lawn. If it's a circle, measure straight across the middle (diameter).
Check Roll Size
Confirm the size of the sod rolls from your local farm (usually 10 sq ft) and the pallet size.
Get Your Results
Enter the numbers above. We'll tell you exactly how many pallets or rolls to buy, including recommended waste.
(Sq Ft Area) ÷ (Pallet Sq Ft) = Total Pallets
To find the number of pallets manually, you first find your total square footage (Length × Width in feet). Add 5% to 10% for cutting and waste around the edges, and then divide by the square footage of a single pallet (often 450 or 500 sq ft).
Everything You Need to Know About Buying Sod
Why Should You Install Fresh Sod?
Laying fresh sod gives you an instant, beautiful lawn without the wait and unpredictability of planting seed. It prevents soil erosion, stops weeds from taking over bare dirt, and provides immediate curb appeal to any home.
How to Measure Your Lawn
For rectangular yards, measure the length and width in feet. For circular yards, measure straight across the middle (the diameter). For irregular shapes, break the yard into smaller sections and use our calculator's "Multiple Areas" tab.
Rolls vs. Pallets
Sod is typically sold by the roll (or piece) and by the pallet. A standard roll is often 2' x 5' (10 sq ft). A pallet typically holds 40 to 50 rolls (400 to 500 sq ft). If you need more than one pallet, scheduling a bulk delivery is almost always the best route.
Preparing for Sod
Before laying sod, ensure your topsoil is graded and free of debris. We recommend amending the ground with quality topsoil or compost to give the new roots a healthy start, which you can calculate using our Soil Calculator!

Sod should be installed immediately on the day of delivery. It is a living plant and can dry out or begin to compost itself quickly while sitting on the pallet.
